Oh, hi! Yes, I am still alive and thriving, just busy. :)
I have been cloth diapering my now 6 month old daughter since she was five days old. We are loving our modern style cloth diaper journey! I have a two girlfriends that were also going to try cloth diapering this time for their newborns and so when I was trying to find a creative way to give them cloth diapering accessories, Google gave me nothing really. I decided to make a cloth diaper cake somehow. I made one cake into a 2 tiered cake, and the second cake in the shape of an old-school (prefolds) diaper (the two tiered cake can be found by following this link). Here is how I did my prefold diaper cake:
For my prefold style cloth diaper cake my “ingredients” were: 4 washcloths (to use as cloth wipes), 2 newborn onesies, 2 bath towels, a car seat cover, a pocket style cloth diaper, and a baby blanket to fold it all up in, plus two safety pins to close the diaper, but I’m sure a Snappi (alternative to safety pins that many parents swear by because you can never stick your child with the pin!) would be a good idea if the mom is using prefolds and covers when the baby arrives. This style works better if you have flat “ingredients” like anything fabric so it can be folded, and nothing too bulky.
If you ever used flats or prefold diapers, making this basic fold may be familiar to you.
Next, layer all the items on top of each other and set in the middle of the blanket. I knew I had to fold the middle in half, so I didn’t put any hard to fold items in the imaginary fold “line” so that the diaper would close right. Hope that makes sense. Then I folded the edges of the blanket up a little, about 2 inches or so on each side.
Next, take one end of the blanket and fold it diagonally on the middle layer (as shown above). Fold other end the same way. Below is how it will look with both ends folded.
Next, fold diaper in half, from bottom to top.![]()
You should see the “wings” well as this is what you will pin to get the diaper closed.
Fold the wing tabs to the front and pin, or Snappi shut.
Done. :)
